Out of Great Loss...

Tribute to Honor's Beginnings

Welcome to Tribute to Honor. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) established in 2001, right after the 9/11 tragedy. We were originally started by five Portland Oregon police officers who were soon joined by several local firefighters. Our first mission was to help all of the affected first responders in New York who lost so much. When they were taken care of, the organization was brought back to Oregon to help local police and firefighter families. After ten years helping fire and police families, we decided to expand our efforts to the whole community.

In 2016, Grant Coffey, a retired Portland Fire Battalion Chief and longtime coordinator of the Hazardous Materials Team, came and asked us to become the umbrella organization for local fundraising events in honor of USMC CPL Keaton Coffey, KIA in Afghanistan on 5-24-12. These included crossfit shirt sales, raffles and other events to raise funds to support local causes in Keaton’s name, like the fledgling Keaton Coffey Project – K9’s for Vets in honor of his son.

These new projects became the primary activities for T2H and coincided with Wayne’s need to step down from his longtime management of the non-profit. After several meetings, the T2H Board voted in May of 2017 to transfer leadership of T2H to Grant. A new Board was formed and the By-Laws were modified to reflect an expanded mission. This new mission will include Military veteran causes and support of the families of these Heroes. Our transition was finished in June of 2017. Itl included in part:

  • An expanded mission statement, including not only police and fire causes, but military veteran fund raising projects and causes.
  • A new and larger Board of Directors, including members of the community of fire, police and military veterans.
  • The Keaton Coffey Project will bring its current fund raising structure to T2H and continue to support local causes like the Keaton Coffey Memorial Scholarship and the Vietnam of America, Chapter 585, Albany, Oregon.
  • K9’s for Vets – we have given away seven dogs to veterans in need so far as part of the Keaton Coffey Project K9’s for Vets and are in the process of developing a partnership with local support canine agencies, to continue a limited program to raise funds, train and donate K-9s to Vets. This effort was started in honor of Grant’s son, USMC CPL Keaton Coffey – an MP and a K-9 Handler who was attached to a Spec Ops Marine Raider Team, when he was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 24th, 2012.
